Walking Tour of Broken Hill then travel to Yunta
The guided walking tour of the town was great –
so much history and stories. What
impressed us was the concern the town had not only for their own tragedies
(mining disasters and losses) but for all those battling whether it be for the
miners who were locked out 1909-1911, to those lost in Port Arthur Massacre, to
the band members of the Titanic who played while the ship went down, and their
own police lost in the line of duty. They
raise money and send it to many of those who are disadvantaged.
What we also liked was the strength and
solidarity of the union who also ran the local newspaper “The Barrier Daily Truth”.
We also like hearing of the heros of Broken
Hill like Tom Mann who was arrested for inciting and leading the 1909 mine
strike, gaoled and released on the condition that he never address a meeting in
NSW again – so he went over the border to SA and the men came to hear him over there!

Pro Hart’s sculptures are always fascinating.
We will come back and visit again Broken
Hill. Travelling further west we spent
the night in a free camping spot at Yunta which has a pub, post office and
service station. We enjoyed the company
of the publican and his wife over a few drinks before retiring across the road
to our van for the night.
