Off in the van to visit the many gorges around
the Flinders Ranges. So many different types of rock formations in all the
gorges – a geologist’s delight.
Our first taste of 4WDriving through creek beds
with water crossings and following other dry creek beds with the road winding
through the bottom of the gorges. Very
pleased with how our VW van is performing on the dirt – so glad we had the
suspension raised and the all-terrain tyres fitted and puncture proofed.
We enjoyed learning some of the history and
lives of the early settlers here and the troubles and battles they had on their
hands with miners, other pastoralists, and the elements – especially the
Wills. It was great to see the remains
of their cottage, outhouse (see Rodger on the outdoor loo) and the kitchen –
away from the house due to embers hitting the thatched roof of the main
cottage.
On the way back to camp we nearly hit a roo who
hopped out in front of us – so many dead ones beside the roads.
Roos abound in the outback, sadly lots of road kill is the norm. Beware while driving at dusk and dawn, that's when they are prolific. And always, always slow down if you spot any live ones on the side of the road. They change direction in a flash and will jump in front of a moving vehicle.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise, enjoy your holiday. Blog spot looks good.
