Sun 22 Sept 2013 Church, Fishing, & Fireworks at Broome

We were very keen to go to church as we haven't had the opportunity for so long. We went to the Anglicans as they had a 9.00 am service. It was a lovely outdoor/ indoor building, with big verandas all round and lots of French windows to open onto it. The service was traditional but laid back, as everything is in Broome. Afterwards we had a chat with a couple of Aboriginal guys over cups of tea.

Next we headed out to the jetty so Rodger could try out his new rod and I sat under a shady tree and had a harp practise. Rodger caught 2 yellow tailed brim but they were only little so he threw them back.

We stocked up with food for the next leg of our journey and returned to the camping ground, where Rodger washed several layers of red dust from our car, it took him nearly 2 hours!

This evening is the closing ceremony for the Festival of the Pearl so we headed down to Cable Beach about 5.30pm. There's a natural amphitheatre on the grass area there. Rodger headed down to the beach to take some pictures of the camels and I saved us a spot for the concert.

There was plenty of room for everyone in Broome to come and watch and even though it wasn't an alcohol - free event, the atmosphere was relaxed and friendly the whole evening. There were lots of children there and they had a lovely time running around and dancing. In the concert there was a band, that sounded rather like "The Waifs", "The Duelling Sopranos", "The Cabaret Girls", who danced and posed with large fans and, finally, a dance band called, "Adam Hall and the Velvet Boys".

At last it was time for the fireworks and they were excellent! They went for at least 20 mins and we saw some we'd never seen and we've certainly never been so close before. In typical laid - back Broome style, they just closed off a bit of beach and let them off just metres from us all. It was a great end to our lovely week here.
