When we set off and got to the main road I saw
a truck coming, assumed it was heavily loaded and slow and decided to pull out
quickly and get in front of it, so I didn't have to trail behind for ages
before I could overtake. Unfortunately, he was empty, caught up before I could
pick up speed and blasted me on his horn as he overtook. We stopped at the next
roadhouse so Rodger could sample their homemade sausage rolls (2nd best so far)
and the driver came over to warn me that trucks can't stop or slow down
suddenly, so to be more careful. I apologised and we thanked him and off he
went. About an hour later we saw him and overtook, waving to each other.
We passed through Port Headland which was a
huge culture shock for us. It was wall to wall roadworks and mining trucks and
we were glad when we got through. We were heading for a ghost town called Cossack,
which was the first port in North Western Aust. and an important town for
pearling and guys arriving for the goldfields.
Due to over fishing and the end of the gold
rush, Broome became the pearl town and port and Cossack was finished by 1910.
We arrived in the late afternoon and it was very interesting, all the public
buildings have been beautifully restored and, apart from a group of off duty
miners, we were the only ones there.
It was all no camping so we thought we'd stay
at nearby Pt Samson, but the camping grounds were fancy resorts and very
expensive so we had a swim and a shower at the beach and headed back to the
main road. As darkness was falling, we stopped in the first lay-by and who
should be there, but our friend the truckie! He had collected an earth mover
and was now on his way home but has to be off the road after dark as he's a
wide load. We were pleased to see each other, his name is Mark. He came over
for a ginger beer and we chatted until late about many things, including
families, the refugee situation, God and having a relationship with Him.
