Today's journey was very uneventful. We passed
a couple of roadhouses but no towns and the first 2 hours the landscape was
just scrub. I drove and Rodger practised guitar in the back. Once I got
back to the North West Coast Highway, I was shocked to find that there were
other people on the road and I was expected to share it! For months we've been
on roads so deserted that we may only see a couple of trucks and camper
trailers all day, now there was a constant stream of caravans to overtake and 4
x4s overtaking me.
We stopped for lunch at a rest stop and then
Rodger drove and I looked at all the guide books to get a rough idea of where
we'd like to visit in the next few days and where we could camp nearby. The landscape
began to change, with trees and wild flowers beside the road and then we saw
fields.
We arrived at Kalbarri at 2.30pm, which gave us
time to go to a few lookouts and beaches and for Rodger to check out the surf,
which was wild and wind-blown.

As we were driving along, a strange creature
shot across the road. We'd no idea what it was but we got a good look at it and
some photos.
Gila monster or Bob-tailed lizard |
We've
found a camping ground and hope the surf situation improves in the morning. We
have Internet access here so we were able to try Bundeena Camp again and
finally found Rhonda to answer the phone! They're having a great time and good
weather.
There's a very nice camp kitchen here so we
were able to cook a good dinner and use the computer in here to, as our site is
unpowered. We showed the photo of our mystery creature to some of the other
campers and somebody else had seen one today and called it a bob tailed lizard.
We were then able to look it up on the Internet and see the photo is the same
as ours.
