We had breakfast, packed up and went for a last
snorkel in the Aquarium. It was very different today, as there were big tides
coming over the reef, which created a very strong rip. We got in at one end of
the reef and flew along, so fast we could hardly register what we were seeing -
Ian Thorpe would have been jealous of our speed! We did it twice and got a
fleeting glimpse of some fish but it was so hard to get in to shore, we decided
to call it a day. We saw the little boys from the next tent down there too, but
they'd also given up on snorkelling and were digging sand castles.
We called in to have one more look at the
blowhole on the way back and it was enormous and there were also huge waves
breaking over the cliffs and the water had come halfway up the car park.
As we came into Carnarvon, we stopped off at
the Dish, the communications satellite dish built to help with the Apollo space
missions. There's a little museum there with lots of memorabilia and also a
replica of one of the space capsules, which was about the size of a Mini!
Piece of Skylab that fell to earth |
We booked into the same caravan park as before
and skyped Tim and Amy then Andrew and Bass and the kids, we also had a phone
call from Russell, which was a lovely surprise and excellently timed! It was
also great to find we had some SMS messages from friends waiting for us, when
we came into mobile contact.
We went through the usual process of washing
ourselves, our clothes and the car, as we were covered with dust and encrusted
with salt, and enjoyed a BBQ, cooked in the well-equipped camp kitchen.
