We slept well in our free camping spot and woke up early so we could
drive back to the toilet block, where we had invigorating cold showers and
breakfast. At about 9.00am we set off for Busselton, a popular holiday resort
because it faces North and is very sheltered.
There's a very long jetty, almost 2kms long,
with a little train that takes people out to an underwater observatory at the
end of it. It's very much a seaside town and excellent for families, with safe,
white sand beaches and lovely playgrounds, BBQs and picnic tables - but no surf. We liked the
toilets because they had really nice border tiles with sea creatures on them.
We went to the little museum and the Visitor's
Centre, which was in an old lighthouse, where we were told that Yallingup is a
good place for both surfing and snorkelling. We went back to the beach front
park to have lunch under the tall Norfolk Pines before heading off to Yallingup, over on the West coast.
We were surprised to find it was only half an hour away and is a tiny place,
with only 3 streets. Rodger was so delighted when he saw really good waves -
we'd almost given up hope by now. He got straight into his wet suit and headed
out and caught about 6 good waves. The surf was 3-4ft with an occasional larger set coming through breaking off a reef with a couple of fast sections. The wave was predominately quite fat ad a really easy Mal wave - also no hassles as only three surfers and two paddle boarders out - heaven ans so good to get back in the surf again.
Here are some shots looking up and down the beautiful beach from the lookout. Right in front of the surf spot is a small lagoon you cross to get out to the surf over the reef and its also a safe swimming and snorkling spot.
There's a camping ground just across the road
from the surf, so we decided to stay here, so he can have another go in the morning.
It's a bit expensive, but a beautifully kept park, with lush grass and well
equipped kitchen and good BBQs. We were actually able to sit outside in the sun
without being blown around by a gale force wind or attacked by mossies or
flies. We had to have a powered site, so we'll take advantage of it and watch a
movie tonight.
