Fri 16 Aug 2013 – Around Darwin Beach & WWII Tunnels

Lovely surprise first thing this morning when our friends Annabella and Claudio discovered us in the camping area and came to say goodbye as they fly back to Italy tomorrow.  We wish them God speed and safe travels back home and hope they can adjust to real life without too much trouble.

Toured around Darwin today picking up a part from Trakka for the Van from the GPO then off to view the harbour.

We visited the WWII oil storage tunnels built to protect the Navy oil supplies – unfortunately only finished after the end of the war.  Interesting info and photos of Darwin in the War.

But also showing the futility of War!

The harbour area is lovely with parklands, a wave pool and a harbour beach netted for box jellyfish.  We were happy to cool off at the beach.  Travelled around to look at the swank Cullen bay beach and marina area – where a wedding was soon to be held.

Rodger, having had no success fishing for barramundi, did the next best thing – off to the fish markets at Fisherman’s Wharf to buy some fresh barramundi fillets.  They even gave Rodger a senior’s discount and free lemon!  Beautiful on the BBQ wrapped in alfoil with lemon, pepper and nuttelex – yum!  It will be off to the fish markets again tomorrow before we leave for Litchfield National Park.
