Woke up, swam in the pool and then walked along
the lovely lake foreshore of the campground.
Camped near us were many vehicles in a variety
club rally bash going across to Broome.
As we were leaving Kununara, we stopped to fill
up with petrol and discovered there was a Coles. Even though we were in a hurry to get on our
way, I called in to see if I could get my bread and returned with 4 loaves of
the really nice multigrain - what a bonus!
We were in a hurry because we had read that the
road into the Bungles is so bad that it takes 3.5hrs to travel the 53 kms. As
we had 250kms to go before the turnoff, and it's dark by 5.00pm, we had no time
to waste.
Rodger has taken to sitting in the back &
practising guitar while I drive if we are on bitumen. I was learning some
solidarity sop parts from the tape, so the first 250 Kms passed quickly &
easily. At the turnoff we changed drivers and set off on the " terrible"
road. To our surprise and pleasure, apart from being very corrugated in places,
the road wasn't bad and we arrived at the Bungles (which are really called
Purnalulu) in just under 2 hours - in time to set up camp and get in position
to watch the sunset. The rocks glow red like Uluru and Kata Tjuta.
On the way down, we discovered a big solar
panel and realised it was to drive the pump for water from the bore up to a reservoir
on the top of the hill. This supplies drinking water for the camps, but it
still needs boiling before drinking.
